    When Paul Huf decided to become a professional photographer in 1942, he specialised primarily in portrait photography. Later on he considered his decision to have been particularly fortuitous. Over the course of the years he had the occasion to photograph such international stars as Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren and Jacques Tati. He also attained the status of court photographer which meant that he had the honour as a Dutch subject to photograph the Queen of the Netherlands. In 1965 his fame had spread to New York where he was part of an exhibition of ’12 famous photographers’. Although Huf never went to live outside of his country, he travelled all over the world. Whatever he found unusual or beautiful, he recorded passionately on film and made the close-up his trademark. Huf reflects the essence of a culture with a simple but effective picture: a mountain of watermelons, a simple solitary wall, or the imposing portrait of a Chinaman.
